Understanding the Different Parts of Your Jeep

Whether you have a Jeep already or are looking to buy a new one that is engineered to handle all types of terrain, you will want to understand what the various systems are used for when off-roading.

Depending on the model and trim level you get, your Jeep may come with a specific 4x4 system. With these 4x4 systems, you may have two modes to choose between: 4x4 High-Range or 4x4 Low-Range.

A majority of the time, 4x4 High-Range will be all you need. This is ideal for both driving over slippery surfaces as well as loose terrain. When in 4x4 High Range, you can drive over dirt, mud, snow, and rain and maintain great control and momentum. Plus, you can engage this mode at speeds of up to 55 MPH.

If you need more power at lower speeds though, you will want to switch to 4x4 Low-Range mode. This will increase the amount of torque sent to the wheels while driving at low speeds of no more than 25 MPH. This is helpful when you are trying to climb up steeper hills when out off-roading. Unlike High-Range mode, you shouldn’t use Low-Range on slick surfaces. In addition, you only want to be going about 3 MPH when engaging the system.

Another part to know about is the locking differential. This component causes your wheels to spin at the same time so that you can up your chances of having more traction. Similarly, some Jeep models may offer a limited-slip differential. This feature works to send torque to the wheel opposite the one that is slipping in order to regain any lost traction.

Yet another way to know your Jeep and its off-road capability is to learn its dimensions. It’s important to know which limits it can reach, so that you stay within those parameters. Some important numbers to consider include the following:

  • Running Ground Clearance: the amount of space between the undercarriage of your vehicle and the ground below
  • Approach / Departure Angle: the steepness of a hill your vehicle can handle when ascending or descending
  • Breakover Angle: the steepest angle your vehicle can reasonably handle when going over obstacles

When you know these angles, you can more accurately predict and measure whether or not your Jeep model is capable of going over a certain hill or obstacle. For extra protection, see if your Jeep model offers skid plates or rock rails. With either piece of equipment attached, you can have some added assurance that the hardware underneath is being protected. Bumpers work in a similar way to shield the front or rear of the vehicle.

Tips for When You Head Out on the Trails

While taking your Jeep off-roading, there are various situations that you may come across that you want to be prepared for. First, you want to make sure you pack all the essentials. Anything can happen out on the trails, so make sure you are prepared for any scenario. It is important to have a first aid kit as well as a fire extinguisher with you. Also, bring gear, food, and extra clothing in the event you will have to camp for a night or two.

Another thing you will want to do before you head out for your trip is to air down your tires. Taking some of the air out of your tires will help improve your traction since it will mean more of the tire tread is in contact with the ground.

Then, when you are out on the trails, be ready to cross over various obstacles. When the road gets rocky, your 4x4 Low-Range mode will be ready to help you conquer the terrain. Just remember to go slowly and take one movement at a time. You also want to try to keep your vehicle moving forward at all times.

Many of the Jeep 4x4 systems also come with the Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System. With your hand on a dial, you can switch between modes like Snow, Sand, and Mud to adapt to the surface you’re currently on.

When you come across water, you will want to first determine the depth of it before driving through it. You can test it by getting out and standing in the water. This will let you see just how deep it is, what lies underneath, and how strong the current is. Then when you are ready to cross, slightly angle your truck upstream and maintain a steady, moderate speed while crossing.
