Community Spotlight: Fountain Square Clay Center

Clay CenterHave you been looking for a new artistic outlet to get your hands dirty at the end of a busy week? Well, the Fountain Square Clay Center has a fully developed clay studio retrofitted into a unique industrial building that used to manufacture packaging materials as well as car parts. It’s a creative-social space at its best, with 30-foot ceilings, a large workspace, and plenty of skylights.

They offer a wide array of beginning and intermediate classes for you to enjoy and create all of the work you want. For potters that need their personal workspace within the community and without the class, the center has rentable studio space.

Classes

One-Night Class

Now you don’t have to worry about going out and buying new planters for your back patio. This class is offered every Saturday afternoon for people aged 14 years and up. All you have to do is register online prior to the class you wish to attend and sit down for a guided session with one of the Fountain Square Clay Center’s instructors.

The one-night class provides you with three pieces of clay to mold into whatever kind of pot that you can think up. There’s no pressure to keep any of your completed works, so you could use the class as a stress reliever. Come back after two weeks to take your creations home after they’ve made their way through the kiln!

4-Week Classes

Clay Center near Franklin IN A variety of 4-week sessions are offered throughout the year, so you can pick and choose the techniques you would like to try. Take a wheel throwing class to improve your clay-shaping repertoire. There are also other distinctive classes that delve into the worldly expanse of pottery, such as Japanese Raku.

8-Week Classes

If you’d like to learn even more about the art of pottery-making, this immersive class might be the one for you. Students receive 25 pounds of clay to be used across eight weekly two-hour classes. You have the opportunity to use glazes and the kiln for firing free of charge in addition to taking advantage of open studio hours to practice independently. The only requirement is to bring your own tools to the center.

Little Potters

Take your children for a bonding experience like no other. This intro class involves large group instruction, where you and your child get to learn the basics of hand-building, coloring, and texturing clay. Students will also get some one-on-one time with the instructor to understand the function of a potter’s wheel.
